It’s been over a year now since my diagnosis and I’ve spent most of this time using prescriptions and OTC medications to treat my symptoms and prevent degranulation.
I love my medicines, but I’ve begun to wonder lately if there isn’t more I can be doing for myself to help combat these MCAD driven inflammatory and allergic responses I still have.
Are there “alternative” (I hate that word!) or natural ingredients I can add to my arsenal?
Thanks to this disease, I already eat really well and my diet is rich in luteolin, a flavinoid that is recommended for treating brain fog (among other things), yet I still struggle with systemic inflammation and allergic responses daily. And it’s driving me crazy!
I tried quercetin with mixed results months ago and haven’t went back to it, although I may do that again soon, but first I want to try another natural ingredient that is supposed to really help those of us with mast cell disorders to control the inflammation and food allergy response.
I first came across this information on FitLifeTV’s channel on YouTube:
Watching this piqued my interest so I did a quick Google search for “turmeric & mastocytosis” and was surprised to see published research detailing the effects of curcumin on mast cell derived inflammation and intestinal anaphylaxis (!) at the top of the results:

IgE antibodies and mast cells play critical roles in the establishment of allergic responses to food antigens. Curcumin, the active ingredient of the curry spice turmeric, has anti-inflammatory properties, and thus may have the capacity to regulate Th2 cells and mucosal mast cell function during allergic responses. We assessed whether curcumin ingestion during oral allergen exposure can modulate the development of food allergy using a murine model of ovalbumin (OVA)-induced intestinal anaphylaxis. Herein, we demonstrate that frequent ingestion of curcumin during oral OVA exposure inhibits the development of mastocytosis and intestinal anaphylaxis in OVA-challenged allergic mice.
Then I found this comment on an old mastocytosis forum thread.
That was enough to get me motivated!
I ordered some pure curcumin powder from BulkSupplements.com. I chose them because according to their ingredients list their curcumin powder is f Sugar, soy, dairy, yeast, corn, gluten and additives.
Which means it *should* be safe for me to use (unless of course the curcumin itself triggers me!).
It’s not easy finding “safe” anything out there because I have dairy (all forms!), soy AND corn allergies. Just about everything has one or more of those in it. Because of this, I have to forego taking a lot of pills.
Even without a trigger-filled capsule, I had such a hard time with the powdered quercetin. And because I was just too sick to really put much effort into using it back then, I decided now that I’m feeling a lot better and more stable I would do things differently.
I found a supplier who has empty gel caps that are also free from all of my above mentioned triggery things. Which means now I can just encapsulate my own pills safely. Hallelujah!
I also ordered a pill encapsulation machine that fits the size of capsules I bought so now I get to just sit back, wait for the post and try to keep my mast cells from freaking out in the meantime.
